portrait of an Imam

I never had a lot of experience and overlap with the practice of the muslimic religion so I was curious. I am an atheist now but I grew up Catholic and church services and religious education accompanied me from a young age. Somehow there´s a interest in religions. I have attended Christian worship services but never experienced a Friday prayer. When I met the Imam of a mosque in the center of Bielefeld, I was impressed by the openness and kindness of this man. He allowed me to have a lunch with him and the other Muslims and also to attend Friday prayers. This was not that self-evident as I am a woman- usually Muslims are separated by gender during prayers. In Friday prayers women are sometimes allowed to pray in the main room in a back row of the room while men are standing and sitting behind the Imam in the front. I think Friday prayers weren´t that different from a service, even if it seemed to be more intimate mainly because of the location and the way of moving during prayer.
