Portrait of an Imam

There are many prejudices against Muslims in Germany. I wanted to deal with this and my own fear. When I met the Imam of a mosque in the center of Bielefeld, I was overwhelmed by the openness and kindness of this man. I was allowed to have a lunch with him and the other Muslims and to attend Friday prayers. This was a rare opportunity for me me as a woman. Usually Muslims are separated by gender during prayers. Sometimes on fridays, in this mosque, women are allowed to pray in the back row of the room while men are standing and sitting behind the Imam in the front. I think Friday prayers weren´t that different from a service, even if it seemed to be more intimate mainly because of the location and the way of moving during prayer.
